Dr David Teo
Dr David Teo is an experienced psychiatrist and psychodynamic therapist with over 15 years of expertise in treating a broad spectrum of mental health conditions across the lifespan. His clinical interests include youth mental health, psychosomatic medicine, occupational mental wellness, and psychodynamic psychotherapy.Dr Teo firmly believes in the importance of fostering a trusting therapeutic relationship with his patients. His approach involves a sensitive exploration of his patients’ values, experiences, relationships and life circumstances to understand the person behind the symptoms. He works collaboratively with patients, their families, and other healthcare professionals to develop holistic, personalised treatment plans that address the biological, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects of his patients’ difficulties. He integrates evidence-based medications and talking therapies tailored to patients’ individual needs and preferences. Dr Teo’s goal is not just to alleviate symptoms but to support personal growth and self-discovery, helping his patients thrive, flourish, and find fulfillment in their lives.

Dr Teo graduated from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, and was subsequently admitted as a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (United Kingdom). After attaining MOH specialist accreditation in psychiatry, he pursued advanced training in Psychosomatic Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center under the prestigious Health Manpower Development Plan Fellowship. He is also trained in Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) and Group Analysis, equipping him with a range of skills to offer integrated person-centered care.

Before entering private practice, Dr Teo served as a Senior Consultant Psychiatrist at Changi General Hospital (CGH). In over a decade of public service, he led key initiatives across the Adolescent, General Adult and Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, Sleep, and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy services. His diverse clinical experience also includes serving as a military psychiatrist for the Singapore Armed Forces. Dr Teo headed CGH’s Health Wellness Programme (ASCAT CGH), a community mental health programme for youth and adults that earned the 2023 SingHealth Excellence (Distinguished Team) Award. He was also the founding lead of CGH’s Medical Humanities Programme which uses the arts and reflective practices such as Balint Groups to promote person-centered care and address staff burnout. In recognition of his dedication to compassionate care, Dr Teo was awarded the 2024 Singapore Health Quality Service Gold Award.

A passionate educator, Dr Teo continues to mentor and train healthcare professionals. He served as Clinical Assistant Professor at NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and Duke-NUS Medical School and teaching faculty for the National Psychiatry and SingHealth Family Medicine Residency Programmes, playing a key role in building mental health capabilities across the specialist, primary care and community settings. His dedication to education has been recognised with teaching awards.

Dr. Teo is regularly invited to share his expertise at international conferences.  He continues to publish extensively in international journals and textbooks and serves as Secretary for the World Psychiatric Association Psychotherapy Section and the Section of Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists, Academy of Medicine Singapore.

Dr. Teo is deeply committed to enhancing mental health awareness and improving access to quality mental healthcare. He actively contributes to national mental health committees and volunteers within the community. He regularly speaks at corporate events, community forums, government agencies, schools and religious organisations to promote mental wellness.

In private practice, Dr. Teo continues his mission of providing collaborative, compassionate, and holistic care. Fluent both in English and Mandarin, he provides culturally sensitive care to help his patients achieve lasting recovery and meaningful personal growth.
