After graduating from NUS in 1982, Dr Kaan went onto specialty training in orthodontics in Glasgow, Scotland. He returned to Singapore and worked as an orthodontist in the Government Dental Clinic. In 1993 he opened his specialist private practice and worked restricted to orthodontics for 17 years. In 2011, he joined The Oral Care Centre.
Dr Kaan is actively involved in teaching for the past 15 years, as a senior adjunct lecturer in the local orthodontic residency training postgraduate program at the Faculty of Dentistry, National University of Singapore.
In 2009, Dr Kaan was elected by the dental fraternity to the Singapore Dental Council.
For the past 2 decades, Dr Kaan has also been involved in HIV & AIDS education; counseling public and groups like Ramakkrishna Mission Boys Home and the hearing impaired.
Since 1997, he has been actively involved in organizing volunteer missions to bring free medical-dental-surgical services to the needy in countries in Asia and Africa.
Besides the main work on adolescent treatment of malocclusions with the various types orthodontic techniques, Dr Kaan have a few special interest areas.

|2||Interceptive orthopaedic treatment of developing skeletal discrepancies.|
Working on long-term management programs for children with growth discrepancies of their jaws using functional appliances.
|3||Combined orthodontic and orthognathic surgical management of adult skeletal discrepancies.|
|4||Multi-disciplinary cases with other dental specialties like maxillofacial surgery, prosthodontics, periodontics, endodontics and pedodontics.|
|5||Treatment of adults with post-orthodontic relapse, diseased and mutilated dentitions.|
|6||Orthodontic management and active appliance therapy for children special needs, eg autism, cerebral palsy, developmental delays and cranio-facial deformities.|
